Today in Japan is known as “White Day”, exactly one month after Valentine’s day. On Valentine’s Day girls give out to male colleagues a giri-choco (courtesy chocolate) and usually a handmade chocolate honmei-choco (chocolate of love) is given to the man/boy they like (the girls only one).

White Day is when the males who receive either chocolate are expected to return favour of the gift’s they received. From what I had read, the gift is usually more expensive.
Some popular gift’s I have read include: white chocolate, white chocolate cookies, jewellery, marshmallows, flowers and even white lingerie among other gifts.
When I was in March last year I had no idea what White Day was at first as observation points such as Towers in Tokyo and Osaka seemed a popular place for couples to come or people on dates.
White Day was first celebrated in 1978 in Japan, as an “answer” to Valentine’s day it say’s on Wikipedia and it was first called “Marshmallow Day” as marshmallows were marketed to men.
