Taiyaki (たい焼き) is a Japanese confectionery which is shaped like a fish. Taiyaki translates into English as “baked sea bream” and comes with many different fillings. Taiyaki was first created in Azabu, Tokyo in 1909 called Naniwaya and can be found in most places in Japan apparently. Your best place to find it will be in the food courts or the Japanese Matsuri festivals.
As you can see the “fish” shape is created using the moulds with pancake/waffle batter and is then filled with different filling’s.
When I tried Taiyaki in Odawara, Japan I had the choice of having it filled with red bean paste (azuki beans) or sweet potato. I choose red bean paste, as can be seen above, and it tasted pretty nice
. Other common fillings include custard, chocolate, cheese and some shops even sell Taiyaki with weird fillings such as Okonomiyaki or Gyoza.
Taiyaki is usually cooked until it is brown on both sides, but I was also informed that you can get white Taiyaki in Odawara and other areas of Japan thanks to a franchise called “Onagaya“. Onagaya opened it’s first White Taiyaki stand in Fukuoka prefecture in December 2007 and as of 2009 they had 85 stands nationwide in Japan.
I found when I ate Taiyaki, that is was similar to the Ningyo-Yaki a Tokyo confectionery which I tried in Asakusa.
